'Self' Inquiry is a little like doing the housework with glasses on rather than off! AWARENESS of the dust there gives me the opportunity to clear it away. Daily dusting keeps my heart pure and open to beauty and Simplicity.
Choosing HOW to 'Do' the Work and what to practice is a personal decision and personal preference, of course. There is no One Way - However, it is necessary to wake up to the Need for Awareness, especially of the internal chatter, which tends to steer our lives completely. It is helpful to have a way of Observing and eventually being able to choose to step aside from our thoughts, which often shadow the desired and necessary state of freedom and Joy longed for by every human heart.
The 'Practice' does not have to be hard, it can be fun. It is definitely enlivening!
If it IS the ONE FOR YOU, it will feel good, natural and most of all ENJOYABLE.
My personal journey began with a 'Teacher'. Finding one is a true gift, but the teacher does not and cannot do the work for you, they can only point the way and perhaps act as a catalyst for 'allowance' or 'surrender' (of natural resistance) which is often necessary in order to recognise and differentiate all the varied aspects of one'Self'.
I am deeply grateful to my teacher for the short, but eternally enduring time, spent reawakening me to my inherent 'tools' which direct me towards true In-dependence. The 'work' one chooses becomes a lifelong adventure and continual focus.
A Teacher is not necessary for everyone, but it helps and certainly speeds the way!

Meditation is offering you genuine Presence to yourself in every moment. It's the capacity to recognize clearly that every moment is a Gift of Life, a Gift from the Earth and Sky.
~ Thich Nhat Hanh
"When you concentrate on listening, immediately you hear noises which have been there all the time though you did not hear them until you started to listen. The sounds did not just begin then; you just did not become aware of them until then. In the same way my presence is all around and within, but you have to clear away other things before you can become aware of me."
